Correlated Magnetics

The technology of Correlated Magnetics is a new technology which could be applied to my portable/dispersed libraries as a way to function and to provide further services of KITS.

Magnetic Structures

This visually communicated the ideologies of magnetics which allows me to identify and assimilate a strong connection to data transferal and further flexibility.  This needs further investigation however is promising in order to outline my architectural entity.

Identifying and Exploring Axis

In order to understand the flow of information and the placement of the portable/dispersed libraries,   axis of movement and transition was found.  The curved shape and straight between the built entities of parliament house allow for the selection of libraries to be simple.  The exploration into what is included within the built/changed entity is also explored through some simple and quick sketches.  Trying to jot down every thought in a drawing is difficult and is proving to be harder than deciding the direction of my concept.  It is also going to be very challenging to pull of my idea as it visually very complicated.  I am not sure if my sketch up skills are adequate enough to cope with this extreme curvature and flexibility. 

Crotchet

Crotchet is a primitive form of weaving wool and other threads to traditionally make blankets, sweaters and beanies.  Applying these methods of weaving could substantiate the construction methodology of the canopy.  This perhaps in conjunction with the triangulation of the fishing netting would provide the best of both worlds of structure, shadow, function and therefore experience. Food for thought. 

Physical Exploration _ Netting

The accidental purchase of this fishing netting was perhaps the most important object within my physical exploration.  This weaved mesh is to some degree structurally stable when taking its own weight, as well as having the ability to morph, move and mold to desired stretch.  Many design features can easily be made just by scrunching, pulling and manipulating the fibers.  This then establishes the netting as the most flexible and architecturally viable material.  The information highway therefore will take precedence through this form and adaptive nature. 

Physical Exploration _ Thread

 

The idea of portable/dispersed libraries is the main function to the KITS (Knowledge Information and Technology Services) which acts as nodes of access for the parliamentary function of the building.  In exploring this idea, connectors were placed and linked through thread to express the flow of data/information and the intertwined nature of the system.  The library nodes also act like neurotransmitters  nerves that are centralised by a brain function in order to carry out tasks. In this respect the bounded thread was placed in the central location of the building to signify this relationship.  Again organic shadows were also formed which now seems to be a reoccurring theme prominent to the design process. 

Physical Exploration _ Plastic Netting

This plastic netting was an off-cut gathered from reverse garbage with the intent to sew them together and offset them to formulate off set circular shapes.  This however was far too much trouble.  Through the exploration of this idea the plastic netting stretched and then when released returned to the original size.  This elasticity of this material also lends itself to the information highway in respect to the idea of moving with the demand for data.  Shadows were also cast whilst straining and twisting the material which again was a pleasant accident.  This is an experience element that would be complimentary to the canopy however not sure how successful this would be. 

Physical Exploration _ Plastic

Taking precedence from the melted foam,  the straight perforated plastic sheeting was also heated and manipulated to form something new.  The flexibility of the plastic when under unusual conditions lends itself to the defense mechanism idea associated with protecting the information services through the canopy.  Although this idea is not fully resolved, and far too complicated for the short time frame, the notion of exploration has to be identified in order to substantiate the importance of the information highway.  This physical exploration was not as successful in determining a design outcome or drive for the project, however clearly demonstrates the properties of materials and the adaptation in which they present when faced with change of conditions (such as heat).

Physical Exploration _ Foam

This exploration, although grounded in artistic babble, is an expression of this project in itself.  The intent was initially to take a block or a whole object and change it in a way that it still remained itself but with more flexibility.  By adding a slight bit of mentholated spirits and some heat the burning of the foam revealed an organic and circular burn shape.  This is highly symbolic of the invasion/alteration of parliament house in Canberra - where form is expressed within the building, creating a new visual but also function.  This although very artistic and subjective has propelled the project into a hands-on approach, where the curvaceous flexible canopy that is the information highway can function. 

Further research into movie of Tron the director Joseph Kosinski is actually an architect.  This explains the immaculate attention to detail and design elements that appear in the film.  Through the built environment, the portrayal of the story is enhanced significantly however to the trained eye; more depth of character is gained through the identification of the historical design furniture such as the Barcelona chairs, etc.  The incorporation of these somewhat ‘classic’ design pieces with the futuristic ideology, of living inside technology, the vision of Tron is clearly communicated. Hopefully the simulation of the built environment can be communicated within the information highway and the information services which it provides.  

The following is a link to the website of Joseph Kosinski who demonstrates a clear understanding for not only the built environment but also how it is perceived by humans.  When watching the movies associated with his various projects, it is clear that the synergy between people and architecture is still maintained whist also allowing for the elements technology to emerge.

Reflection_Week 10

The Information Highway is starting to conceptualise and create form within my mind.  Allowing the concept to mature in my mind allows for a greater synthesis of drawing as the direction is already clear.  In order to provide a truly flexible entity, the Information Highway needs to exhibit elements grounded in reality but looking towards the future.  Specific elements highlighted in science fiction, lends itself to forward thinking and the notion of enhancing human life through flexible means. Further investigation into this future flexibility needs attention as no prior interest in such items of fiction has ever inspired or encouraged architectural expression.
