Visualizing Flexibility as an Architectural Solution











New Age Library Precedent



The Brabant Library a proposal for MVRDV for the Libraries 2040 Project.  Increased urbanization and population ave allowed the suggestion of new library to be found to accommodate this with the integration of not only books but information services. The circular tall building spans 230m high, allowing for shelving for over 5 million books whilst integrating with normal library functions such as reading rooms - however have now become mobilized in order to cater for supply and demand. In addition to this mobile adaptive discourse is an internal transport system which interfaces with an external system to connect to other locations which house other functions/resources. 

Parliament as a Network





Parliament House is a network of Parliament Processes and Activities.  KITS (Knowledge, Information and Technology Services) improves and enhances the governmental system and parliamentary processes as a network for the skeleton in which function is built.

Flexible Iconic Exemplar

The Yorkshire Pavilion - Lightweight structure which is flexible in respect to the way it provides a communal area through voided space which can be changed to cater for each specific function.  The Iconic nature of the structure is also substantial in the way in which the physical form is truely recognizable and  signifies the area in which its situated. 


















Pneumatic Architecture

Inflation and Implementation at critical moments in order to provide and entity can stretch to the ideas embedded within flexible changes for Parliament House. The following are adaptive animations or architectural installations which further highlight the flexible architecture as a solution or rather a process to resolution.

Virtual Information Sharing Precedent

Wingscape is a movable structure with a flexible membrane which moves with the building but can be changed for light and ventilation requirements.  Structure to enhance communal sharing of information is unique in the way which the interactive function perpetuates the movement and flexibility of the space.

Images of Canberra






 Visualization of the City of Canberra has become pertinent in deciding what areas of Parliament House to change to be flexible.  It is evident from these images that every object of use has its time and place in order to provide each function of parliament house.  The design and urban typology of Canberra is also key element to the situation of the building, allowing a view to be captured by most spaces on the exterior grid-like city.
